Platform Presentation on Post-Active Remediation Monitoring (PARM) to be given by REGENESIS at the 2013 Florida Remediation Conference (FRC)

Contaminated site remediation professionals will gather at the Florida Remediation Conference in Fort Lauderdale to discuss soil and groundwater cleanup efforts in Southern Florida.  On Thursday, May 9th, Drew Baird, East Region Manager for REGENESIS, will give an insightful platform presentation on Post-Active Remediation Monitoring (PARM). The formal title of the talk is Can we PARM Yet? Groundwater Quality after Remediation at Multiple Sites in Florida.

Presentation overview:

In-situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) and enhanced aerobic bioremediation (EAB) are proven, cost-effective, and widely-applied methods for contaminant mass depletion, plume stabilization, and site closure. A common challenge on projects where ISCO and EAB have been employed is the transition from active remediation to Post-Active Remediation Monitoring (PARM), as entry into PARM can be delayed due to Florida DEP guidance on groundwater monitoring. Various monitoring parameters (DO, ORP, pH, among others) are important for determining the distribution and/or longevity of ISCO and EAB amendments and are therefore critical interpreting treatment performance. Other parameters (TDS and other inorganics) may be indicators of distribution but more often measure the effects of the applied chemicals on groundwater quality, and many have state/federal limits in drinking water. There is some overlap between remediation performance parameters and groundwater quality parameters, but current Florida DEP guidance does not differentiate between remediation performance parameters and ground water quality parameters. The lack of differentiation directly affects transition into PARM. This presentation will evaluate groundwater quality data from sites where ISCO and/or EAB have been employed to treat PHCs in Florida and to clarify the role of various constituents in ISCO/EAB processes. Site examples include a former roadside spill in Broward County, Citrus County, and Miami-Dade County. At all three sites, entry into PARM was delayed due to the presence of various parameters that have little, if any, bearing on active remediation. Many of these parameters are indicators of residual presence of injected fluids but do not indicate that the active components – i.e., those product constituents responsible for hydrocarbon treatment – remained within the Zone of Discharge.

Scott has over 25 years of experience within the contaminated site remediation industry with 13 of those years as an environmental professional, specializing in groundwater and soil remediation technology design and implementation at Regenesis. He is primarily responsible for project oversight operations and executing highly successful remediation projects. In past roles at Regenesis, Mr. Mullin was involved in expanding a regional client base by developing teaming relationships with environmental consultants, evaluating efficacy of multiple remediation technologies to achieve clean-up objectives, generating technical designs and cost proposals, presenting solutions to clients and providing technical support through technology selection, site implementation and post application review.

Speaker 2: Ryan Ferguson 

Ryan is an Associate Engineer/Product Manager at Regenesis. He has an MS degree in mechanical engineering from the University of California, San Diego, and he holds a BS degree from the University of Southern California in biomedical/mechanical engineering. He brings a diverse background in engineering, biology, and the physical sciences to the Regenesis Team. New Webinar Announced: Remediation Field Studies Evaluating the Effectiveness of Catalyzed Persulfate (PersulfOx™) vs. Base-Activated Persulfate

This webinar event will detail two field study remediation projects designed to evaluate the effectiveness of in situ chemical oxidation (ISCO) using catalyzed persulfate (PersulfOx™) vs. base-activated persulfate on petroleum hydrocarbons. One study site was impacted by gasoline within a shallow unconfined silty sand aquifer, whereas the second site was fractured bedrock impacted by heating oil.

The field studies were designed to evaluate the two different types of persulfate applied at each site and reagent-specific characteristics including:

  • Material delivery into the treatment area
  • Subsurface distribution
  • Reagent persistence
  • Treatment effectiveness
  • Potential for rebound

Key findings that will also be discussed include:

  • Distribution of oxidant solution varies by injection method
  • Buffering reactions appear to have a significant impact on pH-based activation
  • There is limited correlation between laboratory and field test
  • Catalyzed persulfate (PersulfOx) produced significantly better treatment results than base-activated persulfate
Special Guest Presenter: Rick McGregor of InSitu Remediation Services

Rick McGregor is President of InSitu Remediation Services based in Southern Ontario Canada. Rick holds a B.Sc. and M.Sc. from the University of Waterloo in hydrogeology and geochemistry and has over 20 years-experience in in situ remediation. His experience includes working as a research hydrogeologist with Environment Canada’s Wastewater Technology Centre as well as leading a mid- sized consultant’s remediation group. His company specializes in the design and delivery of various chemical and biological reagents to the subsurface with sites across Canada and internationally. He has served on numerous Canadian and American federal government technical committees and has published several peer-reviewed papers on assessment and remediation.

Ms. Rebecca Mora is a senior environmental engineer at AECOM with over 15 years of environmental investigation and remediation experience. She specializes in design and implementation of innovative technologies, particularly for chlorinated solvent, 1,4-dioxane, and perchlorate-contaminated sites, as well as innovative site characterization techniques and use of environmental molecular diagnostic tools (e.g., CSIA and molecular biological tools). In addition to project work, Ms. Mora is the leader of the AECOM In Situ Bioremediation Technical Practice Group, a member of and internet-based trainer for the Interstate Technology Regulatory Cooperation (ITRC) Environmental Molecular Diagnostics (EMDs) group, and part of the AECOM/UCLA research team for biodegradation of 1,4-dioxane.

PersulfOx™, a New Catalyzed-Persulfate Technology for Groundwater and Soil Remediation

REGENESIS recently announced PersulfOx™ Catalyzed Persulfate. This new environmental technology is a patented, sodium persulfate-based in situchemical oxidation (ISCO) reagent designed specifically for groundwater and soil remediation at contaminated sites, including brownfields.

Traditionally, sodium persulfate has been used and activated with the addition of a separate component such as heat, chelated metals, hydrogen peroxide, or a caustic base. These activation processes are inherently complex, costly and can pose certain health and safety risks. By design, PersulfOx simplifies the activation process and reduces on-site health and safety liability by offering environmental professionals a new, all-in-one reagent with a built-in catalyst. There is no hazardous activation process, and performance is equivalent to the best alternative persulfate treatments available today. In the field, the material is easily mixed with water and applied into the contaminated area using common subsurface injection techniques or soil mixing tools.

Well Application of PersulfOx™ for chlorinated volatile organic compound remediation

Additionally, the PersulfOx catalyst further increases the product’s effectiveness by providing a microscopic heterogeneous surface where the contaminant and oxidant can converge and oxidation reactions can occur repeatedly. This unique and highly efficient “surface-mediated oxidation” process, first introduced in 2007 with RegenOx®, the company’s first ISCO technology, provides several contaminant-reducing benefits, including:

  • Increased efficiency, as it brings oxidant and contaminant together, isolating the oxidation reaction from soil matrix effects,
  • Direct chemical oxidation,
  • The formation of sulfate-based free radicals which in turn oxidize the contaminant, and
  • The formation of ancillary free radicals and other oxidizing species which destroy contaminants within the contaminated matrix.

REGENESIS Sponsors the Southern California Chinese American Environmental Protection Associations Fifth Symposium on Global Emerging Environmental Challenges

In support of the Southern California Chinese American Environmental Protection Association (SCCAEPA) and the Global Chinese Scientists Environment Forum (GCSEF), REGENESIS recently sponsored and participated in the Fifth Symposium on Global Emerging Environmental Challenges and Government Responses. Held on August 9 – 11, 2012 at the Hilton in Los Angeles, this 3-day Environmental Symposium focused on a range of environmental specific topics including: soil and groundwater management, air quality management, surface water/storm water management, low carbon economies and sustainable development. To accompany the overall technical program several unique and interesting field trip opportunities were also made available to attendees. Some of the groundwater remediation specific site visits included a tour of the Irvine Desalter Project at the former El Toro Marine Corps Air Station where a TCE plume in under active remediation and the site cleanup project at former Tustin Marine Corps Air Station (MCAS). Other off-site trips included the Orange County Sanitation District Wastewater Treatment Plant, the Orange County Water District Groundwater Replenishment System, the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) air quality monitoring station in Pico Rivera, Los Angeles County Sanitary District Puente Hills Landfill and the AQMD Head Quarters.

London Olympic Park Environmental Cleanup Uses Bioremediation Technology ORC Advanced® to Treat Hydrocarbons and Expedite Construction

2012 OlympicsThe multi-billion dollar development of the 500 acre London 2012 Olympic Games Park has been one of the largest Brownfields regeneration projects in recent years.  Located in Stratford in East London, the site was formerly an industrial estate with uses including: chemical, fertilizer, engineering works, landfills and depots leaving a legacy of soil and groundwater contamination.

The Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA) set strict deadlines for the Olympic facility construction projects.  The development included the construction and refurbishment of 16 new major stadia and sports facilities.  More specifically, the subsurface foundations for the London Aquatic Centre (LAC) were to be completed by the 27th July 2009 (exactly three years before the London 2012 Olympic Games Opening Ceremony).

The LAC site was contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons from lubricating oil as a result of historic operations.  The first stage of remediation began in November 2007 using dual-phase vacuum extraction (DPVE) to remove the LNAPL, however due to the strict ODA deadlines and integration with construction programs (starting in April 2008) prolonged use of DPVE was not practical to remediate the dissolved phase hydrocarbon plume.  An in situ solution became the only viable option.

In Situ Enhanced Bioremediation, a widely accepted and well understood natural biodegradation process was chosen to cleanup this portion of the site. This approach utilizes indigenous microbes to aerobically biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbons in-place. The actual process is facilitated using an injectable, Advanced Oxygen Release Compound (ORC Advanced®). Upon hydration and injection, this powder-like material accelerates aerobic bioremediation by releasing molecular dissolved oxygen for periods up to 12 months on a single application. Without this valuable oxygen supply, the required aerobic bioremediation processes either cease or proceed at very slow rates.

The patented Controlled-Release Technology (CRT) in ORC Advanced allows for an efficient, long-term release of oxygen which provides optimal conditions for sustained aerobic biodegradation. CRT also saves time and money during implementation by eliminating the need for multiple oxygen release compound applications.

Additionally, ORC Advanced® was applied at the LAC site using direct-push injection.  This application approach is highly efficient as it requires no permanent well installation, above-ground piping or mechanical equipment and after application, no operational costs or further site disturbance.

Remedial objectives for the Olympic Games Aquatic Centre were satisfied and redevelopment of the site was unhindered by the ongoing in situ remedial work. More importantly, the construction-phase was completed according to the ODA set deadlines.
